Wine Testing + visita Museum

Our first evening we will be hosted by the “Museo Geologico e delle Frane” where Geologist and enolog Luca will present the story and rare geological and cultural history of Civita di Bagnoregio, while tasting local wines that are paired to the geological structure of the region, each exhbiting its unique provenance.

During this relaxed and informative evening you will learn why Civita is refered to it as not the “dying city” but the city that struggles to live. The Museum illustrates the characteristics and evolution of the territory, the history of Civita and the struggle for its survival, landslides and stabilization works, its life of the past and present.

Workshop activities

In Civita di Bagnoregio, you will be staying in lovingly restored residences or small apartments that are simple and truly charming. The Civita Institute “campus” is small, and we are all linked by a central garden where we will share many glasses of wine and conversation.

What will I learn?

During your time in Civita di Bagnoregio, disconnect from the digital universe and connect simply with your senses to experience firsthand concept creation and design in a personal and simple way.

The key is to spend this week completely free of our modern dependence on technology, absorbing and expressing your design with the simplest of tools in these breathtaking surroundings. Each participant will get in touch with “hands-on experience of defining concepts, sketching and creating an appropriate physical design, and finally, the rare experience today of “creation and making” by hand in the simplest and most profound ways.

What will we work on?

Your time in Civita is dedicated to exploring and expressing, as famed Italian Architect, educator, and designer Andrea Branzi says, “your personal poetics in design.” This is the ultimate design connection to the place and experience that is so Italian.

You will design your “experience space or furniture” with your hands, tools, and the materials provided: Workshop participants will be asked to make a simple journey of discovery in the village.

Following this initial grounding, we will discuss the workshop brief and goals in detail. We will divide the group into teams, and each team’s focus will be to develop (with the guidance of the DesignMashup team) a concept and simple small scale prototype constructed by hand with local and supplied materials to represent their concept for an experiential space that will be built in the small piazza, the goal is to choose one winning entrant for construction the following year.

Your team’s final designed prototype can be personal and intimate or open and communal – an experience for all. It must be physical and not virtual. It should be hand assembled and created from simple materials you find, and we will provide for you.

For your project to succeed, it must be a designed object/space/piece of furniture that evokes a reaction and interaction. You may create a place for all ages, one of solitude, a place of relaxation, a place to isolate, a place to share with others, to perform, a place to read, to learn, to dream, a place to work, to slack, to draw, to nap.

We ask that you design an object that is well thought out, not simply a sculpture or art. It is stable, precisely structured or free form, functional, either blended perfectly into the environment or acting as a striking contrast.

At the end of the workshop, each team will present their creative provocations to the DesignMashup team, tutors, and interested residents of Civita di Bagnoregio. The focus is to allow you/your team, and the other participants to create a series of design concepts that, if realized, can add to the experience of Civita di Bagnoregio, for the residents and future visitors.

In this way, our work has the potential to be memorialized in time, and we become a living, breathing part of life in Civita di Bagnoregio.
